Interior Accommodations and Layout

The interior of Morning Mist is finished in Philippine mahogany cabinetry and trim. The original wood paneling in the salon, galley, dinette and aft stateroom has been stripped back to natural wood and varnished, set off by white fiberglass overheads that keep the cabins bright. The layout follows the early 47 Commander plan, with the galley and a convertible dinette one step down and forward of the salon.

The private aft master stateroom has twin berths and an en suite head with separate shower stall. Just forward of it, the mid-ship stateroom keeps its original twin berths along with a storage locker and vanity. Forward, the guest cabin has twin V-berths and its own head in the bow.

Interior Styling and Additional Features:

  • Galley, dinette and salon walls stripped to the original natural wood paneling and varnished (approx. 2018)
  • Aft stateroom walls stripped to the original natural wood paneling and varnished (approx. 2021)
  • NEW Dometic DTG16 16,000 BTU reverse cycle heat and air conditioning, aft (2023)
  • NEW Dometic DTGX6 reverse cycle heat and air conditioning, forward (2024)
  • Four Cadet CEC163TW 120V electric wall heaters, up to 1,600W each, in the forward head, salon, aft head and aft stateroom (2020)

  • All electric galley with full size refrigerator and stove/oven in a period copper finish
  • Philippine mahogany cabinetry and trim with white fiberglass overheads
  • Hanging lockers and drawer storage in the staterooms

MAIN SALON

The salon sits at the center of the boat and makes full use of the 15’ beam, with good headroom and an open floor plan. Large wraparound windows bring in natural light and views of the water. It is furnished with two swivel recliners, leaving room to add seating, an entertainment center or a home office.

MASTER STATEROOM

The master stateroom is aft, separated from the salon and forward cabins for privacy. Twin single berths are the original 47 Commander arrangement. The walls have been stripped to the original wood paneling and varnished, and four opening portlights and an overhead hatch provide light and cross ventilation. Storage is ample for living aboard.

  • Twin single berths

  • Mahogany hanging locker
  • Dresser and bedside drawers
  • Full length mirror

Master Head

The en suite master head is entered through a solid mahogany door from the stateroom and is located to starboard, forward of the berths.

  • Ventilation: Opening portlights for light and fresh air

MID-SHIP STATEROOM

The mid-ship stateroom sits just forward of the master stateroom, off the passageway to the aft head. It keeps the original Chris-Craft berth arrangement and works well as a third cabin for guests or extra storage.

  • Berths: Two original twin berths, one along the hull side and one along the bulkhead shared with the master stateroom (no mattresses)
  • Storage: Storage locker and four drawer vanity with mirror
  • Flooring: Marine grade painted sole (approx. 2023)

  • Headroom: Full standing headroom, a benefit of the flush deck design
  • Light and Air: Four opening ports above v-berths

Guest Head

The guest head sits in the bow, directly off the forward cabin, an uncommon arrangement that gives the guest cabin its own private facilities. It has a toilet and sink with storage cabinets; the shower is in the aft head.

  • Toilet: Electric marine toilet (2019) plumbed to the holding tank
  • Vanity: Laminate countertop with sink and storage cabinets below
  • Walls: Painted (2024)
  • Flooring: New laminate flooring (2021)
  • Heat: Cadet electric wall heater (2019)
  • Ventilation: Extra large overhead hatch
  • Headroom: Standing headroom

Galley

The galley is one step down and forward of the salon, opposite a convertible dinette, as in the early 47 Commander layout. It keeps the cooking area separate from the salon while staying open to it for light and conversation.

  • Appliances: All electric, with a full size refrigerator and electric stove/oven in a period copper finish
  • Layout: Counters along the port side keep everything within reach
  • Light: Open to the salon and its large windows, with room darkening cellular shades (2019)
  • Dinette: Booth dinette across the walkway with seats recovered in vinyl (2014); the table lowers and the cushions convert to a double berth for extra guests
  • Walls: Stripped to the original natural wood paneling and varnished (approx. 2018)
  • Flooring: New laminate flooring in the galley and dinette (2021)

Construction and Key Features of the Hull and Deck

HULL

The 47 Commander dates from Chris-Craft’s move from wood to fiberglass, when the company laid up its hulls with a generous margin of strength. Chris-Craft built 233 of the 47’ Commander aft cabin model between 1966 and 1976, and the design is known for heavy construction and excellent seakeeping.

  • Solid Laminate: Solid fiberglass hull bottom and sides with no balsa or foam core
  • Structure: Stringers and bulkheads tabbed to the hull for a stiff structure
  • Hull Form: Modified V with a fine entry forward and flatter sections aft for stability at rest
  • Spray Strakes: Molded strakes forward help keep the decks dry

DECK

The flush deck runs unbroken from bow to stern, which gives the 47 Commander her clean profile, generous interior volume and easy movement around the boat. Decks, house and hardtop are molded fiberglass with varnished teak accents.

  • Flush Deck: High hull sides carried aft to the aft deck for maximum interior volume
  • Bow Seating: Molded fiberglass seating built into the forward deck
  • Construction: Fiberglass decks, house and hardtop, with teak used for handrails and trim
  • Signal Mast: Varnished teak mast on a hinged tabernacle with working anchor and running lights; folds aft to lower air draft for low bridges and winter storage

AFT DECK

  • Outdoor Living: Large aft deck above the master stateroom, used by the current owners as a waterfront patio
  • Space: The 15’ beam carries well aft, with room for deck furniture, lounge seating and a dining table
  • One Level: Helm, companion seating and aft deck share one continuous deck level
  • Railings: Stainless steel railings with solid teak cap rails around the aft deck

Ship Systems

ENGINE AND MECHANICAL

Morning Mist has twin Ford 427 V8 gasoline engines rated at 300 HP each, with direct drive to fixed pitch bronze propellers. The engine room is beneath the salon and is reached through lifting hatches in the salon sole. As on other 47 Commanders it is a compact space with limited headroom, but the removable floorboards give good access from above.

  • Engines: Twin Ford 427 V8 gasoline inboards, 300 HP each; 1,156 hours (port) and 1,100 hours (starboard)
  • Condition: One engine has a cracked piston and smokes, and the owners do not currently run it
  • Current Use: The owners use her as a dockside home and run the operating engine only for short trips to the pumpout dock
  • Access: Lifting hatches in the salon sole; removable floorboards expose the cylinder heads, manifolds and valve train

PLUMBING AND TANKAGE

Fuel and fresh water are carried in metal tanks, and the two holding tanks and electric heads were installed in 2019.

  • Fuel: 350 gallons of gasoline in two 175 gallon galvanized steel tanks, with fuel level gauges at the helm
  • Fresh Water: 80 gallon tank with pressure water system and an 11 gallon water heater
  • Holding: Two 30 gallon polyethylene tanks (2019), 60 gallons total, with deck pumpout fitting
  • Heads: Two electric marine heads (2019) plumbed to the holding tanks
